Software

The main skill that I have that separates me from most other people in the engineering world is a thorough understanding of all tools that are commonly (and many that are not commonly) used in our realm of work. If I do not specifically list a software in this section, it only is because I needed to limit the list. I have used other Trimble, Bently, and many other pieces of software. Furthermore, I follow technology trends very closely which allows my company to be ahead of all curves resulting in more comprehensive, more accurate, and more impressive deliverables.

Autodesk
Though Autodesk makes great software what they offer at purchase is sometimes like using a 3/8ths" drill bit to make a 1/2" hole. There are ways to get it done, but not in the cleanest way nor is it a very reproducible outcome. However, I have been able to make custom tools that allow users to grade out intersections in minutes not days, design storm networks that identically resemble what is installed in the field and match state standards, make tools that seamlessly improve data hand off from survey to civil, and much more!

Adobe Creative Cloud
Adobe's Creative Cloud suite (CC) is by far the best and most comprehensive set of tools for anyone producing high level marketing materials in any field. Their AI makes work the used to take days now take only a couple minutes. However, it is my understanding of all the tools and knowing the basics of the entire suite, that allows me to assist marketing teams and produce great products for my clients and my employer. From video and photo editing to document and website design, my knowledge of CC complements my engineering work very nicely.

Microsoft
Microsoft is the leader of general office software and in recent years has made huge strides towards usability and function. Yet the large majority of users only know enough to get done what they need in their daily tasks. I have spent years learning the ins and outs of these pieces of software that practically everyone uses and assist co-workers with their documents to ensure they get the most out of the software as well. Everything from complicated formulas and pivot tables in Excel to formatting and quick parts in Word, I know how this suite works and sift through it with ease.

8 years ago when I first was tasked in taking over GIS project that my company had, I had no experience with the software. However, I quickly learned th software better than the GIS technician we hired for this project and ended up delivering a great product to the client. It was through my research and innovative uses of ArcGIS and complimentary software that allowed us to get a couple more large GIS based projects and come in well under budget. Since then, I have continued to advance my skills with GIS databases and now use the software to provide excellent deliverables that provide a level of communication that most engineers are not capable of doing with out an on site meeting.

Specialty Software
Drones and Lasers are great tools but with out knowing how to use very specialized software, they are not overly useful out side of simple marketing pieces. Additionally, it is great to know media editing software, but without being able to produce the original content, the user relies on others. Knowing how to manipulate databases is a great skill, but if you don't have a good way of sharing that information, the information is not as useful as it could be. My understanding of MANY specialty softwares and how to get all the software I know to work together separates me from everyone else that I have met.
I can provide data management, unique/thorough forms of communication, photorealistic visualization, website development, and thorough data collection all through the use of specialized software that I have learned over several years of learning!

General

Working as a civil engineer for more than 12 years and on many different teams and on such a large range of projects has allowed me to understand so many different sides of my industry.  Early on in my career I worked on a municipal team and focused on roadway/highway designs; mostly designing public utilities associated with the job. I then changed offices to be closer to home and started working more on public site designs focusing on accessibility, optimization of land use, and storm water control. After moving to HHE I started specializing in sports facility design where I have created a positive working relation with many suppliers and contractors that specialize in this work.
Working in all different types of civil environments has taught me how to create plans that exceed expectations in terms of completeness and comprehension.

Designing

I pride myself in providing my client with the lowest cost for the best work. Further more, I pride myself in providing them with the most accurate cost opinion possible so they can accurately plan for their future.
In the last several years, I have only had one project where the bids came in more than 5% off my estimate and I believe that was driven by the Covid construction cost hike that was happening daily at the time that project was out to bid.
My knowledge of software allows me to design more efficiently and leaves me with more time to focus on refining my cost estimates. This process is done through a lot of time on the phone just talking with people who preform similar work and knowledge of products and methods needed to complete the job.

Cost Estimating

Working construction for a small contractor doing large jobs gave me the opportunity to learn so much about the physical world that us engineers virtually design. Everything from site requirements of using different pieces of equipment like scrappers and/or excavators to shape a site to how water main actually gets installed down in the hole. I learned where to expect contractors to cut corners and where engineers often over design.
Understanding how the actual construction of my designs will take place, helps me to provide the most comprehensive plans and helps to ensure constructability which in turn results in less ITCs and change orders.
